Getting feedback from one’s peers or colleagues can seem daunting at times. But not if your peers recognize that you’re doing strong, client-focused work, which is the case with Scott Murtha, who was recently honoured as a 2027 Best Lawyer in Canada.
This marks the third consecutive year that he’s been recognized as a top lawyer by his colleagues from across BC, sending a clear signal about their experiences with, and respect for, Scott and his team.
“Being recognized by my fellow lawyers for earning their confidence and respect is truly something I appreciate, and don’t take lightly,” says Scott. “I don’t set making the list as a goal each year, but when it becomes a product of doing the best work that I can for my clients, I’m happy to be recognized for that.”
Scott’s recognition is unique because he’s earned it in two different categories: Corporate Law as well as Taxation Law. It’s unusual for a lawyer to be recognized in two different categories but illustrates the firm’s core niche of providing legal advice to entrepreneurs, family offices and private business owners.
Evaluation process by peers makes Best Lawyers designation unique
The Best Lawyer process uses a rigorous process where the Best Lawyer list is compiled by conducting tens of thousands peer review surveys with lawyers across Canada, where lawyers confidentially rate their peers.
Candidates are nominated by a peer, and then evaluated confidentially by currently recognized lawyers practicing in the same specialties and geographic regions. Candidates are also confirmed to ensure they’re in good standing with the appropriate bar association before finalizing the recognition.
The lists have been assembled and published for 40+ years now, and a lawyer earning a Best Lawyer recognition one year, doesn’t guarantee they’ll remain on the list the following year. That standing must be earned each year, and lawyers aren’t able to pay a fee to participate or be placed on the list, making it unique amongst similar types of lists.
